A map illustrating the situation in Europe in mid-November 1918, in the immediate aftermath of World War I (The Great War or First World War). The armistice on November 11 (Armistice of Compiègne) marked the end of one of the deadliest conflicts in history, with an estimated toll of 20 million deaths (of those about half were civilians) and 21 million wounded. At this historical juncture, Europe confronted redrawn borders, crumbling empires, and the burgeoning wave of national aspirations that characterized the continent's post-war turbulence.
